This in from the National Weather Service:... HIGH WIND WARNING HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL 400 PM EST FRIDAY AFTERNOON...WEST WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS AS HIGH AS 60 MPH WILL CONTINUE TODAY.
We had pretty much the same thing yesterday. No rain, just the wind. I enjoy changes in the weather. They are subtle reminders that we are not in control and that the planet sometimes has a thing or two to say. My love affair with storms, in particular the rain and thunder variety, is learned behavior in it's purest form. My Dad loved a good nor'easter and when most folks sought shelter in the recesses of their homes he could be found sitting out on the back porch observing the gale. My Dad was a storm watcher and now so am I.
After too much television last night, I turned out all the lights, wrapped myself up in a fleece blanket and curled up on the loveseat in front of the picture window in the living room. The wind was a blowin' and I wanted to have a look. Through the window I can see the back yard. Our property borders conservation land and woods flank the yard and span out into the next town. In the dark I listened as the wind blew in from the West. It seems foolish to point out the obvious, but you could hear it as it approached. A low reverberation that by the time it reached the house was a rumble sweeping through the tree tops, bending them like tall grass in a breeze. After a moment all would be quiet again and the process would repeat itself.
The curve and sway of the trees ~ the moan and creak of branches and bark was mesmerizing. I wanted to let it all lull me to sleep but even as much as I love such weather I realize it can be dangerous. If one of those trees was to break, and there are some dead ones out there, it would be a short fall to the window I sat by. So off to bed I went. A little late but happy to have spent some quality time with Dad.
